Moving to Switzerland

Separation of country of residence and country of work: Every day, around 45.000 people commute across the German-Swiss border between their place of residence and their place of work.
Would it be worth moving to Switzerland?

Since the bilateral treaties between the EU states and Switzerland were passed in 1999, it has become easier to settle in the other country. A move to Switzerland is obvious. Nevertheless, many employees, especially senior managers with higher incomes, decide to separate their country of residence and country of work. What counts is what money and quality of life are left after taxes, duties and housing costs have been offset.

Moving to Switzerland - tax comparison

It's worth comparing taxes, especially when you're thinking about moving to Switzerland. It is widely known that the Swiss are a friendly and helpful people. However, the much-vaunted harmony seems to be finding its limits in the tax competition between the cantons. This is especially true for tax competition between neighboring states. A revised agreement to defuse the tax dispute has currently been negotiated. In essence, not much new has been determined, only that in the future we will deal with each other more openly and help each other and give information.

Analyze all sources of income

Whether moving to Switzerland is worthwhile for purely tax reasons can only be assessed by considering all sources of income for the taxpayer and his spouse. Income can also include losses, e.g. B. due to repairs to rented properties. Due to international standards, taxation in the other country can also occur regardless of where you live, and countless other factors can tip the scales in one direction or the other.

Pensioners like to move from Switzerland to Germany

Pensioners like to move from Switzerland to Germany because in Switzerland they have to pay full tax on their pension, whereas Germany only sees around half of it as taxable income.

In Switzerland, the use value of your own property is taxable, and interest can be deducted. Germany does not tax owner-occupied real estate at all. Anyone who lives in a debt-free home will have tax advantages in Germany and should seek tax advice in advance if they are thinking about moving to Switzerland.

Self-employed people in Switzerland are compulsorily insured under the AHV and pay an unlimited 10,3% contribution from their income. However, the contributions only form pensions up to an income of CHF 83.520,00. Exceeding contributions therefore have the character of a social tax.

If the different purchasing power is taken into account, then in most cases a balanced ratio will emerge, but an exact statement can only be made after individual examination and weighing up all influencing factors.

Conclusion: move to Switzerland

A good and sustainable wealth and tax strategy takes appropriate account of and takes into account the very special situation of the person concerned and their family.

Material security is no longer a goal, especially for people with high incomes and assets, but is now a reality. Saving taxes is legitimate, but it doesn't necessarily force you to flee into artificial constructs.
